The barrage of unsolicited parenting advices can really drain out parents. In the process of constantly trying different parenting advices to see what works for them, parents can often feel utterly confused and hapless in terms of figuring out the best way to deal with their children. This is why tried-and-tested parenting advices assume more importance than ever before.

If you’re a parent who’s having a difficult time in trying to reach out to your child about an underlying issue, then this parenting advice from actor Drew Barymore that she got from a parenting expert can prove to be a gamechanger.

On her show, the actor was in conversation with Dr. Aliza Pressman, a psychologist and parenting expert. She spoke about a typical phase in her daughter’s life where the latter would just not want to talk about her problems. The actor-mother admitted that she would go to her to talk about her problem and how that only resulted in her daughter either running away from her or coming back at her. Caught between her extreme reactions, it was when she took the counsel of Dr. Aliza that she found a way to navigate through the situation.

Regulate your emotions

The psychologist adviced the actor to regulate her emotions to the situation. She said that as parents we get scared of the big feelings and we try to fix them. To this, the actor immediately admitted that how she was chasing her daughter and that was not working out for her. The parenting expert added, “We need our kids to know how to dress for the weather and not try to control the weather, because we simply can’t.”

Parenting advice worked wonders

The actor mentioned how it was the best parenting advice she ever got. She told exactly how she approached her daughter Olive when she was going through a rough patch. She told her daughter, “I understand we’re having a moment. I’m on the other side of this door for you. Waiting. When you’re ready, I’m here.”

Come to think of it, this sounds like a great way to address a situation. It’s all about giving the children the space they deserve and need. The idea is to approach the problem with a calm mind whilst allowing the other person to grow comfortable to talk about it.

The psychologist indeed has an important message for all the parents out there. As parents, most of us have a tendency to get worked up when we see our children in any problem. The parenting expert and psychologist says that it’s important for children to come to terms with their feelings and know that whatever they’re feeling is survivable. This will help them manoeuvre through problems in life in a more calm and effective manner.
