Southeast Michigan’s Best Bike Trails

Bring the kids and get some exercise by exploring Southeast Michigan’s best bike trails that stretch across the region. We consulted local experts for a list of the top trails for families, ensuring a fun and active experience. The odds are good that you have one right outside your door.

Border to Border Trail

This eventual 35-mile trail spans Washtenaw County from Livingston County to Wayne County, with large sections already completed in both directions. A section from Ypsilanti to Ann Arbor has already been built, allowing cyclists to safely navigate past Eastern Michigan University, Washtenaw Community College, and St. Joseph’s Hospital. The enlargement of the trail is in progress.

Clinton River Trail

This path spans 16 miles from Sylvan Lake to Pontiac, Auburn Hills to Rochester Hills, and Rochester to Rochester, and it offers countless recreation opportunities. Connecting to the West Bloomfield Trail and the Macomb Orchard Trail, this path leads to even more outdoor excitement.

Detroit RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut Greenway

These trails provide an escape to nature in the middle of Detroit and are open every day from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. The William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor can be reached via the three-mile RiverWalk, while Eastern Market and surrounding neighborhoods can be reached via the Dequindre Cut Greenway. Wheelhouse Detroit, located in Rivard Plaza on the riverfront, rents bicycles.

Hines Parkway

The Hines Drive Trail stretches for 15 miles from Dearborn to Northville, and it’s got plenty of great picnic spots along the way. Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from May through September, Hines Trail between Outer Drive and Ann Arbor Trail is closed to cars for Saturday in the Park on Hines Drive, turning the six-mile path into a cyclists’ paradise.

Kal-Haven Bike Trail

The Kal-Haven trail, which runs for 33.5 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven and is surrounded by trees and tranquility, has been recognized on multiple lists of the best bike trails in the county. Required reading for any family vacation to the western part of the state.

Lower Rouge Recreation Trail

The Canton Center Road and the I-275 Metro Trail are linked by this trail. Parking is free at the trailhead parking lot of Morton Taylor Road, and the trail itself is five miles of single-track trail ideal for mountain biking.

Paint Creek Trail

More than a hundred thousand people visit this trail every year, and it only opened in 1983 in northeast Oakland County. In addition to passing by a number of shops and the Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, the path’s total length is 8.9 miles. The first of its kind in Michigan, this trail was created when the abandoned Penn Central Railroad was transformed into a trail.

Stony Creek Trails

Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township features a popular 8.3-mile paved trail that goes around the lake. We also have 14 miles of trails for mountain biking. Entrance fees are to be expected to enjoy the park. Biking in the other Huron-Clinton Metroparks is also a fantastic way to spend the day (there is 13 total in southeast Michigan).
