Your Voice is Changing

Honk! Squeak! What’s that all about? The trumpet is being played by a goose… What? It might be your voice if you’re going through puberty. Boys and girls both experience voice changing as they grow older, but the boys will see the most significant difference.

Girls’ voices just get a little deeper as they get older, whereas boys’ voices become more profound as they get older. On the other hand, a boy’s voice can alter dramatically – from sounding like a child to a man!

Your Larynx Is Expanding.

How is this possible? The larynx (say: LAIR-inks), commonly known as your voice box, grows during puberty. The larynx is your throat is a tube-shaped cartilage piece—the same material as your ears and nose. You can yell, sing, hum, scream, laugh, and create all kinds of other noises because of it.

To get through puberty, a boy’s body produces a large amount of testosterone (say: tes-TOSS-tuh-rone). As his testosterone levels rise, so do his larynx and vocal cords. The vocal cords are a series of thin, rubber-band-like muscles that run the length of the larynx.

What Is a Voice’s Purpose?

Air rushes from your lungs to produce sound and vibrates your vocal cords. You’ve probably heard the high-pitched twang of a stretched rubber band if you’ve ever tried to play one. The twang will be lower in pitch and more intense when using a thicker rubber band. Vocal cords are similar in this regard.

Before reaching puberty, the larynx is relatively tiny, as are the vocal cords. Adults’ voices are lower than children’s. The larynx grows larger, and the vocal cords thicken and lengthen during puberty, making your voice deeper. Your voice may “crack” or “break” as your body adjusts to the new technology. There are only a few months in this process. You won’t be able to create those odd noises in your voice when your larynx is completed maturing.

Adam’s apple

There is a noticeable difference in the necks of older men and men compared to the necks of younger boys. A section of the larynx protrudes from the back of the neck as the larynx develops in size. In front of the throat, you can see it. We refer to it as the “Adam’s apple.”

Because a girl’s larynx doesn’t develop as large as a boy does, you won’t be able to see it through a girl’s skin. A woman does not have an “Eve’s apple” on her neck.

Your Voice Changes

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to voice development, so some children’s voices may begin to alter earlier than others. Some people’s voices will gradually fade away, while others’ voices will fade away immediately.

You need not be concerned if this has not occurred to you yet. In the meantime, don’t worry too much about the weird noises you produce. An older sister or a buddy who’s been through the same thing can be helpful. You’ll be amazed at how much better your voice will sound in no time!
